What it does
Drums3D is a full drum kit you can play in two places: in the browser at drums3d.com, and on Meta Quest.
On the web
- Hit drums and cymbals with a mouse, with several fingers at once on a touch screen, or with the keyboard.
- Drag around the kit to see it from any side, and pinch or Ctrl-scroll to zoom.
- Play along with 150 simplified grooves in the style of well-known songs, across rock, pop, funk, soul, hip-hop, metal, jazz, Latin and more, at any tempo.
- Short guides on the Learn pages cover a first beat in seven days, tempo data from the 150 songs, and why Bluetooth headphones make drums sound late.
On Meta Quest (early access)
- Strike the kit with the sticks in your controllers. The harder you hit, the louder it sounds.
- Play along with the same 150 grooves, or let the groove keep the kick while you play with your hands.
- Practise with feedback on your timing.
Key decisions
Keys follow their physical position. Every drum has its own key, and the mapping follows the physical keys rather than the letters printed on them, so it works on any keyboard layout.
One groove library for the web and VR. Both versions use the same 150 grooves. They are described as simplified practice patterns in the style of the songs, not as transcriptions of the recordings.
Practice that measures timing. In VR, rings show each hit just before it lands. In “your turn” mode the groove goes silent while a click keeps going, and every note is timed. A report for each drum shows whether you rush or drag, in milliseconds, with one tip on what to fix. Silent bars test your inner clock, and the trainer raises the tempo as you improve.
Adjustable kit. In VR the kick and hi-hat pedals can be assigned to any controller buttons. Drums and cymbals can be moved, the seat height and distance adjusted, and the kit works seated or standing.
No account and no ads, on either platform.
How it is built
The website is built with Astro and TypeScript. The VR app is a separate Meta Quest app that shares the same groove library. The Learn guides are built on the same songs, grooves and tempo measurements as the kit.
Current state
