What it does

Irregular Verbs: 3 Forms (Go Went Gone) is a phone app for learning all 175 English irregular verbs. A session is ten questions and takes two or three minutes.

• Four ways to practise:
  • Easy: choose the past simple and past participle from close options such as bringed, brang and brung.
  • Normal: type both forms from memory.
  • Hard: complete a real sentence.
  • Blitz: answer as many verbs as you can in sixty seconds.
• Listen: every verb has pronunciation, including traps like read / read.
• Learn by pattern: verbs are grouped into families, so you learn the system rather than 175 separate words.
• Keep going: streaks with freezes, a boss round for each chapter of ten verbs, three small daily quests, and a collection that shows each verb as new, learning or mastered.

Why an app and not a list

A table of irregular verbs is easy to read and easy to forget. I built the app around timing: each verb should come back just before you are likely to forget it, and you should never have to decide what to revise.

Key decisions

Spaced repetition for every verb. The app tracks each verb separately. A correct answer brings it back in a day, then two, four and eight days. A wrong answer brings it back tomorrow. Missed verbs return before the session ends, so a session never finishes on a mistake.

Fully offline. The app makes no network requests at all, which you can check in Aeroplane Mode. There is no account, and nothing is uploaded.

One source of verb data. The gowentgoneenglish.com site is generated from the same verb data the app uses, so the forms you read are the forms you practise.

How it is built

The app is one Expo and React Native codebase for iPhone and Android. The verb data, audio and review schedule all live on the device, which is what makes the fully offline design possible.
